Short answerNot every running holiday needs specialist insurance. Look more closely when the trip includes a race, long distance, difficult terrain, high or remote routes, or expensive bookings you cannot refund.
When an ordinary travel policy may cover the trip
Recreational road or park running may appear in a policy’s normal activity list. You still need to check the full policy, declare any medical conditions and make sure the destination and trip length are covered.
When to look more closely
- You are travelling mainly to race or train.
- The event is timed or organised.
- It is a marathon, ultra or multi-day event.
- The route is mountainous, difficult, remote or at altitude.
- You may need search and rescue.
- You have expensive non-refundable bookings or specialist equipment.
A specialist name does not guarantee the right cover
Even a specialist policy may not cover your race. Check who can buy it, which activities are included, what it pays for, what it excludes and how to get emergency help.
Use a scenario checklist
Write down what you will actually do, where, for how long and what you could lose. Compare those facts against current policy documents rather than choosing on the strength of a product name.
This guide helps you know what to check. It cannot tell you whether a policy is right for you. Read the policy you are buying and ask the provider about anything unclear.
