Marathon abroad

Marathon travel insurance for UK runners.

A policy may cover running on holiday but treat an organised marathon, a trip booked mainly to race or cancellation caused by injury differently.

For UK residents travelling abroad Use before you buy or contact a provider
Short answerSome travel policies cover marathons, but only if they cover organised races and your event is within the stated activity level. Check whether you need an add-on and whether travelling mainly to race changes the cover.

What to check

CheckWhy it mattersWhere to look
Taking part in an organised marathonA timed race may be covered differently from running for fun.Activity list and exclusions
Is the race the main reason for the trip? Some policies cover a holiday with a race but not a trip booked mainly to compete.Policy definitions or ask the provider
Medical care and getting homeCheck that treatment and getting you home (repatriation) are still covered while you race.Medical cover and activity conditions
Cancelling before you travelInjury, illness and medical declarations can affect which prepaid costs you get back.Cancellation and medical sections
Race entry feeThe fee may not be covered, or may have its own limit.Cancellation or race-fee section

Before you compare policies

Write down your race, destination and prepaid costs, then check every policy against the same list. If the documents do not clearly cover your event, ask the provider to confirm it in writing.

Questions to ask before buying

  • Does the policy cover a timed amateur marathon?
  • Does cover change if the race is the main reason for the trip?
  • Do I need an add-on or to pay extra?
  • Will medical care, transport and getting me home still be covered while I race?
  • Which prepaid costs could I get back if injury stops me travelling?
  • Is the race entry fee covered, and is there a separate limit?
